GRANDMA'S CABIN
Historic Cottage in
the heart of Medicine Park
For one Medicine Park family, offering
overnight lodging to travelers and visitors in the resort community is
really a labor of love.
Once the home of, and now dedicated to the memory of, Ethyl "GrandMa"
Morefield, the cabin is a rustic two story granite rock abode built at
the base of Mount Dunbar, just one block west of downtown on East Lake
Drive.
GrandMa Morefield was a local icon in Medicine Park for a number of
years. She always had a friendly smile and good word to share with
anybody she encountered. She was one of those unique individuals who
never met a stranger. She was a mother, a grandmother, a
great-grandmother and a friend to all.
The cabin is one of the early homes to be constructed in Medicine Park
at a time in the 1920s when the community was known as he "Queen of the
Southwest."
The nostalgia of the era is prevalent throughout the cabin's amenities
and its landscaping. There is an original stone, wood-burning fireplace
in the main upstairs living area, cedar-beamed ceiling and numerous
antiques and noted artifacts offering the true feeling of home. The
living area also features cable television, DVD and a VCR.
The living area opens out onto a full deck that has a scenic view of
Gondola Dam Falls, with Mount Scott towering in the background. The deck
has tables and chairs placed around a wood-burning chiminea for
enjoyment on cool evenings or just watching water fowl and enjoying the
noted scenery of Medicine Park.
There is also a complete kitchen with a range, microwave, refrigerator
and coffee pot. Gevalia coffees and teas are provided along with other
staples in the kitchen, such as, hot chocolate, cider mixes, sweeteners,
creamers, salt pepper, flour, sugar, etc.
A half bath connects to the upstairs living area which is convenient if
there are quests using the lodge-style futon sofa that makes into a
full-size bed.
The primary sleeping quarters are downstairs
and feature a queen-size bed with a headboard constructed from an
antique wagon wheel wrapped in hand-forged iron roses and grape vines.
The one-of-a-kind headboard was made by

Larry "Doc" Morefield,
cabin owner and a local blacksmith and artisan. Morefield and his wife
Linda are also the proprietors' of The Cobblestone Forge in Medicine
Park. (see related story in magazine)
The master bath has a shower and an antique eagle's claw tub that is
great for relaxing and soaking away the cares of the day. Just off the
master bath is a dressing area with an antique wooden dresser and
vintage mirrors. The grounds around the cabin are landscaped with
several leisure gardens complete with tables and chairs -- perfect for
relaxing and wholesome conversation.
The cabin is located conveniently at the edge of downtown and within
walking distance of the restaurants, shops and galleries. Just across
from the cabin is an entrance to the scenic and lighted Charlie Wright
Medicine Creek Trailway that meanders along the banks of Medicine Creek
from the falls of Gondola Dam eastward into town.
The cabin is a preserved remnant of times gone by. It is sure to sooth
and settle the spirit of all.
The cabin will sleep 4. No children under 6 years of age and no pets
please. No smoking indoors.
